As you may know, Queen guitar legend Brian May spent most of his career exclusively playing the guitar he and his electrical engineer dad, Harold, built in 1964 – the ‘Red Special’.
This legendary original is a three pickup, double-cutaway guitar with Burns pickups and a totally distinctive switching system that allows the guitarist to cover a huge range of tones.
May used his Red Special to create timeless Queen hits such as We Will Rock You, Tie Your Mother Down, I Want It All, and Fat Bottomed Girls.
And the Red Special is still going strong four decades on, thanks to some careful restoration work. According to May, nearly everything on the guitar he built with his dad is in its original state except for the tuning pegs and the rollers on the bridge.
Own the Queen of guitars
To mark 40 years of the Red Special, talented British luthier Andrew Guyton produced a limited edition run, in homage to this beauty.
Working alongside May himself, Guyton made 50 copies which included 40 editions in red to celebrate 40 years of the Red Special, and 10 in green. These are the most accurate commercially available copies of the Red Special ever made.
Out of those 40, only one has been hand signed by Brian May, and Art of Guitar has this very special number right here in Dubai.
The guitar combines the distinctive aesthetics and sound of the original Red Special with a wealth of modern appointments and superb quality,
production-line craftsmanship.
