Collings - CJ Custom - Sunburst, Honduran Mahogany & Adirondack

A gorgeous Jumbo Collings, perfect for strumming and flat-picking! Amazing master-grade mahogany with an Adirondack sunburst top results in a gorgeous guitar that has bags of tone and sustain. The bespoke sunburst top makes this guitar look just as good as it sounds too!

The Collings CJ was designed by master Luthier, Bill Collings, founder of Collings Guitars and one of the most venerated names in acoustic instrumentation. Collings makes some of the best acoustic guitars in the world, numbering Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Keith Richards, and Joni Mitchell among his loyal customers. His company, located outside Austin, is famed not only for the high quality of its instruments but also for a flat refusal to make bargain versions. The Collings Jumbo or CJ is Collings’ version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinct, balanced tone with clear highs and smooth lows. Despite its large size, this model works well with the optional shorter string scale, resulting in a percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response. Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested, with a beautiful sunburst finish over the spruce top, paired with Honduran mahogany back and sides. This guitar sounds unbelievable. Hit an open chord and you can feel the whole instrument come vividly to life.

Some jumbo guitars can be great around the campfire but fail to live up to expectations when you’re recording it working on a subtle piece of music or even enjoying finding harmonies and fabulous sounds that Collings is famous for. The Jumbo does the seemingly impossible by having an almost delicate side, helped in no doubt by the ultra-thin nitrocellulose coating on the super high-grade Adirondack soundboard. Delicate finger-picking can be just as rewarding as strumming chords or really digging in with a flat pick - this guitar can really do it all and looks jaw-droppingly beautiful to boot. A real staff favorite here at Art of Guitar; it needs to find a great new home but we’ll sure be sad to see it go
