PRODUCT DETAILS

Collings guitars are a boutique custom guitars brand from Texas and a real favourite of all our pro and semi pro playing staff at Art of Guitar. Founder Bill Collings led the way until his death in 2017. His guiding principles were hard work, authenticity and the creation of instruments with soul. These remain the main focus of the company today and this guitar is a fabulous example of his ethics, quality and tone at work - he’d be proud to say the least!

Collings make both electric and acoustic guitars. However, their acoustics are arguably what has put them on the map. Collings acoustic guitars are based on classic American heritage designs. Body shapes include Jumbo, Dreadnoughts, Orchestral and 00 models, along with very small runs of parlours (of which we were delighted to get one too!). All are available in a range of variations of woods and finishes.
Every Collings guitar is hand-voiced. The finishing is carried out in several thin costs of nitrocelluose. Hand sanding takes place between coats. This helps achieve resonant, acoustically brilliant instruments with a clean, understated beauty.

There’s a saying amongst high end acoustic guitar aficionados that there’s no such thing as an ‘ordinary’ Collings - we couldn’t agree me! What people mean by this is, unlike some of the bigger builders (Collings makes less guitars in a year than Martin makes per week), there’s no such thing as a factory order or standard run - every guitar is built around the sound board; this means individual prices if wood are tone tested and then the decision of guitar size and shape comes from that work. In essence it means every Collings guitar is a Custom Shop! Also they sound amazing straight out of the case - where other guitars may need a luthier set up before they’re playable Collings come fit to play to a super high standard without our luthier having to get his hands dirty at all!

Collings's Take

This awesome Collings 002H is built entirely by hand, with top quality materials, to be the ‘almost’ perfect instrument. The 00-type body style is incredibly well built. Check out the quality of the bindings, the herringbone inlay and the Ebony bridge pins. Be aware this little she-devil is powerful - don’t be fooled by its size; the clarity of the mid range is well balanced with a powerful bass reminiscent of much bigger bodied guitars.

This Collings 002H is relatively small and light in your hand making it a great ‘sofa guitar’ although you can dig in and belt out chords round the camp fire too. Playability is a strong point too - the neck just glides, it’s so easy and comfortable. Yet Despite the very low action there are no annoying clashes, indeed, in any position, every note comes out to perfection, another facet of the tremendous build quality. And Although the body is small, the decibels produced by this guitar can be considerable, an exceptional result for a 00 model and something rarely seen with other luthiers events at the higher end. The power is there and always filled with exceptional sound complexity. It is an organic sound, rich and warm.

Usually instruments like this Collings 002H this kind are characterized (often afflicted) by powerful means and a slightly nasal sound. The 002H instead has a really big and thick bass making her sound like a bigger guitar. However, it remains an 00 and if you move slightly to the bridge you can bring out all the sparklingly clear  mid range tone you need to have that precise timbre so useful when you want to emerge in a mix or just underline a melody.
